“The following events happen between Friday 12 noon and Sunday 9am.”
Friday 12 noon.
My pastor has someone send me a text at midday asking me to share the word at our youth service on Sunday. My first reaction was why didn’t you tell me on Monday or earlier but I remembered it wasn’t me but i was just a vessel and the maker would channel me to the right path and right message.
Saturday 10 am.
We had been planning a hike to Kitui with guys from my youth ministry at church. On the way there we started discussing the American moon landing and the conspiracies behind it.Which led to us discussing how the red sea was parted and how tsunamis work. Which led to us discussing how the Ark of Noah must have looked like or worked. Which led to a discussion on NASA and the work they do. Which led to us discussing the possibilities of life on other planets. I was telling the guys of how convinced I am that in all the planets in existence that there surely has to be life forms on some planets. We surely can’t be the only life forms in all the universe.
Saturday 10 pm.
I get home all worn out , tired and extremely excited about a happy trip to Kitui. I sit down with my bible to prepare the sharing for the following morning. The verses I had been given on Friday were from 1 Cor 2 and Luke 20. I have learnt in my few years in ministry that to understand any scripture or reading at church you need to read the verses before it to get the context of the verse that is being highlighted. So i read 1 Cor 1 : 18 – 31 and it says
“18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness;24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:29 That no flesh should glory in his presence.30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”
I have never felt more dumb than I did that night after reading those verses. There i was during the day trying to analyse and come up with theories of how God did stuff. There went all my wisdom.
I went on to read 1 Cor 1 and 2 and Luke 20 after that and prepared what to share.
Sunday 9 am.
Sunday Morning. After the QT at night I shared on 4 things that i felt were crucial from those scriptures. So (finally) this is what i shared on Sunday at church.
Based on 1 Cor 1 & 2 and Luke 20. You can read the text on your own.
1. THE NATURE OF GOD’S WISDOM.
1 Cor 1 & 2 Teaches us of God’s infinite wisdom in relation to human wisdom. Chapter 2 verse 5 asks us to base our power in the wisdom of God. Chapter 1 verse 24 speaks of Christ as the wisdom of God. Luke 20 is basically the story of the pharisees trying to trap Jesus using their own intellect and failing to do so. A proper instance in which we see that you can not try to argue or have a debate against God or his things. In verse 8 of chapter 2 Paul writes that none of the world know this power.
So many times I’ve been engaged in discussion by people who claim to not believe in God to prove that he exists. And in almost all occasions I have simply told them that i choose to believe in Him and His son and it always seems crazy to whoever i am having the discussion with. Faith !! It seems crazy at times but that is it. Faith that He is there and He exists. Faith in the wisdom of God, Jesus Christ his only son.
2.THE NATURE OF GOD’S PATIENCE.
Luke 20 9-19 talks of the master that let out a vineyard to people and when he sent servants to collect his share they all got sent away.
He sent three servants. All being turned away till he eventually sent his Son. Let’s pause it there. The master was not going to give up on this people as horrid as they were and brutal as they were.
So many people are at points where they feel that they are too sinful or too bad for God to consider or even hear. So many people have stopped going to church because they feel God has given up on them.
Ladies and gentlemen. 1 John says God is Love and in 1 Cor 13 in the description of Love the first word used to describe Love is Patient.
God is patient with us to a degree that we can not even fathom. He is still waiting arms open wide for you and I. He has not closed your case and moved on He is still giving you another chance.
3.THE NATURE OF SIN
The people who had rented the vineyard from the master beat the first servant and sent him away empty handed. The second servant was beaten , treated shamefully then sent away empty handed. The third servant was wounded in the beating and sent away empty handed. The master sent his son and the people killed him.
The pharisees stood by as John the Baptist was beheaded. They stood and shouted ‘Crucify him’ with Jesus. With Stephen , they stood , shouted and stoned him to death.
The nature of sin is that it grows. Once fed it grows. It never looks back. It does not maintain a status quo. It only looks forward to being bigger. It is not satisfied with a draw like LVG or always finishing fourth like Wenger. Sin wants to win the league and Champions league and the world club cup and the european super cup.
The wages of Sin is death. Once it grows enough it kills you. It kills you spiritually, it kills your relations, it kills your family and at times gets you killed Physically too.
Do not feed that tiny desire, the temptation do not feed it, that slight heat .. do not turn it into a monster fire. Whatever you are struggling with, you need to stop feeding it.
4.THE FINAL PREDICAMENT.
Luke 20 : 18
“Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.”
There are only two ends to sin.
One. Fall on Jesus and be broken. Two. The stone will fall on you.
Whatever you are caught up in , whatever struggle. At times we are always trying to justify what we do. Be it the drinking or sexual sin or the stealing or the cheating or the killing. We are always looking for a theory to explain why we do it. In our wisdom. And as we saw earlier our wisdom isn’t the best option out there.
We need to start tackling issues and thinking of them using God’s granted wisdom. Jesus Christ.
You can either fall on Jesus and break all that is holding you up and killing you and leave it all at the feet of Jesus OR you can wait for the final judgement to fall on you and crush you on the final day.
There are only two ways out of sin, fall to Jesus and leave it there and go ahead with him or He will fall on you and leave you in dust. It’s either Him or Hell. Choose one. There is no other option. I feel that at times we do not hear this enough. Sin will lead you NOT to heaven but hell.
So finally…stop relying on your own wisdom but lean on the wisdom that comes from God and fall at the feet of Jesus.
And that was what I shared. Fall to the feet of Jesus.
